Detective...

I've been a detective with Miss T and her Internet access. Jeepers! Teenagers. Look, I think she is so much more tech savvy than me but, heck, I'm giving her a run for her money.

We have rules that her and I agreed to. Conveniently forgotten by one of us. Internet is ruling her life. And ruining it but she is not aware of this aspect and to what degree.

So, with a little help from a well seasoned expert I have been digging deeper. While she has not been hugely inappropriate, she can be accused of being very niaive. Very niaive.

The biggest problem is that not enough emphasis is given to "World Wide" in the web. Photos and comments are for all to see. Forever. Including prospective employers. Okay, I know teenagers don't think like that, that is what us guardians are for. To see outside the here and now.

Miss T likes posting photos of herself in bikinis and probably also likes the positive comments that come with such photos. This is what concerns me the most. Positive reinforcement from people who don't know her based on superficial attributes. Self esteem cannot be based on something so superficial. To try to get this message across is falling on deaf ears. But the words are being heard so hopefully will be remembered. Photos identifying her are not on which is a breach of the contract we originally drew up together so consequences have been enforced.

I have taken the step of barring Internet access on her phone. Perhaps to be reinstated at a later stage but perhaps not. We searched her Instagram pages together and looked at followers and comments. She was horrified that I knew so much. Keep some tricks up your sleeve I say!!

I didn't ban her from Instagram because I think to do so would teach her to be deceptive. But I will enforce the rules and insist she conforms or faces the consequences. To her I often say this:

"With more independence comes more responsibility"

I use this whenever I can. I tell her if she can't handle the responsibility she can't have the independence. Simple as that.

Feel free to use it dear Bloggers. Lets baffle them with logic and calmness.

Cram It All In...

I'm just sitting here quietly having a nice peaceful, hot coffee. We had to buy a new coffee machine as ye ol faithful died a tragic death. A-p-p-a-r-e-n-t-l-y we were supposed to regularly decalcify it and I guess the Italian to English instructions failed to impress upon us the importance of this. Who knew?

It is now 6.43 am and I have done a Spin class at the gym with 'Matt The Rock', in darkness with strobe lights and peddling in time to the music. He had some funky version of Scarborough Fair today. Pretty darn cool.

I have also just put a red chicken curry on in the slow cooker and although Master T will complain bitterly, that is dinner. He thinks the meat is always too dry for him. Maybe he will eventually be a chef?

Miss T is flying down to spend some time with Aunty LaLa and her family which will be wonderful. The Silver Fox is taking her to the airport. Last time we sent her alone she was 5. She locked herself in the loo and spilled an apple juice on someone. Hopefully at nearly 15 she will be a bit more worldly.

I might spoil Master T a little while she is gone and do some stuff he likes: friends for sleep overs, bike rides... And take him to dinner where he decides. I am off to a conference on the weekend for the at and then having a sleep over at my Besties house. She is taking me to dinner at some Brazilian place. I trust I don't need a fancy wax job to go...

Weekend T'Was..

Caramel Tarts
Well, the clocks have turned back here and I do feel that I have crammed more into my day even though it was just one hour longer! The Silver Fox scooted off early with Master T to pick up a bike. I took this opportunity to hang in bed a little while longer before taking the pooch for a leisurely walk on the beach. I went to a bush dance fund raiser last night and danced like a Drongo, Stripped the Willow and did a little Doe-See-Doe-ing! Sound painful? Naaah, good fun actually! They had a Bucking Bull which was quite a hoot to watch too. Good clean fun!!

Today was also a time to get the whip out and, ahem, "help" Master T with a long overdue project. I never, ever, do the projects but make my children write the information out first and we discuss it, check grammar and spelling and punctuation l-o-n-g before they actually get to write it up on the computer. My children usually go insane when I do this as all they want to do is cut and paste and be done with it. No, no, no!! With me it is the old fashioned way so I need LOTS of patience so both of us don't lose our minds. I might occasionally point out that this is their homework though that I have already successfully completed their grade! Just saying...

Not a fun way to spend the afternoon but today Master T has risen to the challenge and is currently out riding on his new bike with his Dad. I am just mustering the energy to fold the washing, make lunches for school and make dinner. You know how it is.

The Silver Fox is in trouble because he drove past  our favourite pie shop on his way home from purchasing the bike, and DIDN'T stop in to get the traditional caramel tart with cream that we have once in a blue moon when we actually pass this particular pie shop. He said he forgot but he did also know he would be in trouble. It doesn't matter what health kick I am on, a caramel tart from Yatala Pie's is compulsory!

Do you have a busy week ahead? I think I do. We need to decide if we watch The Voice or not because it does become quite a commitment doesn't it? We are still at lose ends after The Block so I hesitate to replace that with another long running series. My sister and her family went to a Blind Audition taping though and she said it was f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s!!!

Those burritos won't make themselves so....

Health and Teaching...

Image

You may know that I educate people regarding their health and I take a variety of approaches depending on the person. With most men I go through their blood test results to show 'proof' if you like of their health in glorious black and white. Sometimes it is a necessary angle to use to increase awareness regarding health.

Sometimes I use velvet gloves and start with the absolute basics as my client might have used all their courage just to come to see me. Health can be very confronting and too often past experiences have involved being told what they "should" have done. I choose not to use this tact but rather find out what is most important to that person, what worries them the most, and start from there.

Sometimes the road to good health can be likened to standing at the base of a huge mountain and having neither the energy nor the stamina to climb, to make so many changes in the daily life of chaos.

I see health as making little tiny changes that the person nominates they are able to achieve. They maybe small but they are a place to start, achievement builds confidence and leads to other changes which in turn leads to more. With support. I see some people for 15 minutes weekly and others I see every two weeks or so until they have confidence. I also focus on education so people understand w-h-y they need to do something. Adults are like that, it has to be meaningful.

I am also wise. These sessions are not for idle chitchat so if there are self sabotaging issues I will direct someone for counseling as it is not knowledge blocking behaviour, but attitude. I work closely within a multidisciplinary team to make my clients feel heard and supported and important.

I love my job. I love to see the proverbial light bulb go off when understanding is achieved. I love empowering people to be responsible for their own health. I have tissues at hand because health can be quite emotional and overwhelming, especially when someone is willing to listen.

I got great advice years ago from a fabulous workshop I attended so if interested, have a peek here. Health is something people can take for granted but it is something that cannot be bought and there are many people living with "if only"s in life. I don't see well people, I only see people on the slippery slope to ill health.

I meet a wonderful variety of people and can definitely say that no two days are the same or that my work is dull. Nope, never dull. These are some things I have learned over the years....
  • How to hold a dagger properly if I want to "slip it under someone's ribs"
  • How to grow marijuana naturally and why the hydroponic stuff is "no good"
  • That using a certain piece of equipment is quite like cocking a rifle
  • People generally only wash their sore foot and because I check both feet, that is how I know
  • Never eat sweets from an open bag, only from a bag I open myself. Never
What do you love about your every day?

Would You Live To Be 100?

Hmmm. I saw this on a sign outside of a health food shop. It got me thinking. I'm sure the point was about taking a supplement to live a strong, long and healthy life but I have never thought about how long before.

Have you? Well, if you had a say in it?

For me, that would be over 50 years from now! Wow!

Lets say you had good health, I wonder what changes there would be in the world? If technology is advancing now at such a fast pace, what can we expect to consider as normal everyday stuff?

Imagine if...

We had time travel. I'm hanging out for this. Of even just getting from a to b Star Trek style. Yup! I would definitely be I that

We drove I the sky, using air. No pollution

Healthcare was easy. Just a zap here and there, good as new.

Makes you think though doesn't it?

Hopefully we get our act together saving the planet, saving the animals and maybe ending poverty and hunger. Surely by then. Surely?
